External gear pumps are positive displacement rotary pumps consisting of a casing with two interlocking (meshing) gears with external teeth. The unmeshing of the gears produces a partial vacuum to draw fluid into the pump. The fluid is then carried between the gear teeth and displaced into the outlet line when they mesh.

There are many common industrial applications for an external gear pump process, including pumping high-viscosity fluids, such as oils, paints, coolants, bleaches, solvents, glues, greases, asphalt, and foodstuffs like syrups and lard.
