A working, large-scale, yet economical, fluid process system allowing for hands-on training relating to the operating principles, performance, troubleshooting and maintenance of industrial pumps. The basic device allows for the illustration of the performance of centrifugal pumps, under different circumstances, including those that impair performance. Basic pump principles such as NPSH, cavitation, the effect of alternate impeller types, and the application of affinity laws can be demonstrated. An “open architecture” allows for the addition of supplemental components addressing additional topics such as pumps in parallel/series, flow through pipe networks, flow through fittings, and introductory process control. With optional components, studies relating to other pump types can also be performed.

The device includes an industrial-duty water pump, incorporating many operating and maintenance features of common ANSI pumps.

The primary instruments and controls are mounted on an independent, tethered, control module, with 19in. rack mounting system. Additional or alternate instruments can be easily added using the control module provided or supplemental control module assemblies.

Based on the devices design features and the pump chosen, additional training topics, such as shaft alignment, vibration analysis, mechanical seal installation, and general pump maintenance can also be undertaken.

Primary reservoir 14-gallon capacity, polyethylene.
Industrial-duty centrifugal pump with back pull-out design, (1-1/4" x 1"x 5"), 1-1/4" shaft diameter, with stainless shaft sleeve, producing a maximum of 35 gallons/min, and a maximum total head of 25 ft. Type 21 mechanical seal, semi-open impeller design, removable suction cover, removable backhead, and elastomeric element coupling. (Complete pump specifications can be provided).
Polycarbonate coupling guard.
Motor, 145T-frame, 2 hp, 3500 rpm, inverter-duty.
T-slotted aluminum pump and motor mounting rails, creating a 5-1/2" high shaft centerline position, and allowing for linear movement, adjusting for alternate coupling types. Four steel motor jacking bars provided allowing for alignment activities.
Control assembly power panel including circuit breaker with provision for lock-out/tag-out, pilot light, instructor key switch, emergency stop button, GFI device, AC-variable frequency drive, digital flow meter, and provision for optional panel-mounted control and instrumentation components. Control assembly tethers to pump assembly using multi-pin connectors.
Industrial-quality Allen-Bradley® AC drive, with provision for PID control, via voltage or current inputs.
