A regional utility came to DAC with a hands-on training challenge: Create a realistic, safe, and mobile training aid for basic training in the adjustment, maintenance and use of Woodward Mechanical Governors as used on the large standby diesel generator sets. These activities regularly occur in a confined space, in a controlled environment, within a nuclear or fossil generation facility. The confined environment is noisy, hot, intimidating, and in reality, dangerous. The utility hoped to teach applicable instrumentation maintenance technicians the full scope of their activities and the principles of mechanical governor control, without the extreme danger and distractions of the actual plant environment or the risk to the operating equipment. DAC designed and constructed this test and adjustment fixture that duplicates the operation of the governor-controlled engine generator, and its mechanical geometry while allowing for work on an actual, customer-supplied, governor driven by a variable speed drive equipped electric motor. Actual components, and customer-supplied technical information were incorporated throughout, in order to ensure realism.
Governor and control panel mounted to a heavy duty, welded steel table with cross braces legs and locking castors.
Motor Drive assembly including geared reduction drive, 1 HP motor, variable speed AC drive, with a nominal governor speed of 900 RPM.
Powder coating of all structural components for long-term durability.
Instrumentation and control electronics including speed and control variable meters, PID controller, VFD, LVDT and custom governor control electronics.
Guards and safety cages around primary drive components.
Emergency stop switch prominently mounted on top center of control unit.
Crating for shipment via motor freight.
